Jacobs had just finished eating dinner and was making some drawings on a piece of paper. They were rough sketches of plans of different buildings, different ways he could take on Barberio’s group. He wasn’t too far into it when his phone rang. Assuming it was Franks, again, since he’d been calling every hour to see if a new plan had been thought of yet, he was surprised to hear that it wasn’t him. It was Buchanan.

“Bucky? What’s up? Been a while.”

“Yeah, sure has. Been busy. You?”

“Just trying to get through the days.”

“Aren’t we all?”

“So what’s up?” Jacobs asked.

“Been hearing some news lately.”

Jacobs sighed into the phone, knowing what he was going to say. “Listen, whoever got killed, it wasn’t me.”

Buchanan laughed, realizing he often gave that impression that he was going to question him about some nefarious deed that had happened. But not this time. “No, it’s nothing like that.”

“Oh. Don’t tell me you’re just calling to say hi.”

“Well, no, not that either. I do have news; things to talk to you about.”

“I’m on the FBI’s most wanted?”

“No. At least not yet. I’ve gotten word through some informants that you’re about to be targeted again.”

Jacobs took the news in stride. It didn’t seem to bother him. After all, there’s only so many times you can be targeted before it starts to become old hat. “By who?”

“Who do you think?”

“Seems like it never truly goes away, does it?”

“No, it doesn’t.”

“I guess it’s that time,” Jacobs said. “They can never go more than a few months without trying some new tactic. Guess it takes them that long to think of something.”

“I wanted to let you know so you can keep an eye out for it wherever you are. Is that why you’re in hiding? ‘Cause you know you’ll never be free of them coming. Or is it because you’ll never be truly done going after them?”

Jacobs hesitated, taking a few seconds to think about it. “A bit of both I guess. Any idea what they’re planning?”

“No, just heard something’s in the works.”

“I don’t even know who’s calling the shots these days.”

“I’ve heard it’s Mallette again,” Buchanan said. “He’s been assigned a new lawyer. They’re looking into loopholes and technicalities to get his sentence reduced, and with Alexander gone, they wanted Mallette back in the game.”

“And how likely is that?”

“What?”

“That his sentence gets reduced?”

“Honestly don’t know. That’s technical legal mumbo-jumbo. Even when we were on the force together it was something we never understood or got involved with. That’s for lawyers to figure out. Why? What are you hoping for?”

“It all starts and ends with one man, doesn’t it?” Jacobs asked. “And until that man is out of the way and buried in the ground, it will never stop, and it will never be over.”

“Yeah. You’re probably right.”

“So I’m actually for whatever makes that possible in the shortest amount of time.”

There was nothing else for Buchanan to say. He understood the frustration. He understood everything that his friend had gone through, everything he had lost.
